STATEMENT BY IRAKLI KOBAKHIDZE, CHAIRMAN OF THE "GEORGIAN DREAM - DEMOCRATIC GEORGIA"

We would like to inform you about the structural innovation planned in the party. By decision of the party’s Political Council, the party is founding a women’s organization.

As you know, the existence of women’s organizations of political parties is a well-established European practice. Women’s organizations are established to ensure the promotion of the role of women and their engagement in party and political processes.

Due to various circumstances, our party was able to nominate only three women candidates out of 64 mayoral candidates in the local self-government elections, while nominating candidates for Sakrebulo [City Council] membership, essentially, only within the limits of the electoral quota introduced by us. You will probably agree that these numbers do not correspond to the objective big picture in our society, and that women deserve significantly wider representation in high positions.

The establishment of a women’s organization will facilitate the career growth of our women team members, paving the way for them to be more successful in both party structures and public service.

The women’s organization will ensure the professional development of the women members of our party while promoting closer cooperation and communication between women party members representing different cities and regions.

Organizational meetings will be held in all regions of Georgia until the end of next week in order to establish the women’s organization.

The National Conference founding the women’s organization of the Georgian Dream will be held in the near future. It will elect the organization’s board members and heads of city and regional organizations. Eleven city and regional conferences of the women’s organization will be held at a later date to elect the bureaus of city and regional organizations.

We believe that the establishment of the ruling party’s women’s organization will not only facilitate the promotion of the role of women in party and political life but also create new opportunities for the protection of women’s rights and the realization of their interests in society.
